Xavier men 20th in NAIA preseason tennis poll

NEW ORLEANS — The Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis team
never climbed above 25th in any NAIA coaches poll in 2007. But the Gold Rush is 20th
in the preseason poll announced Wednesday.
One caveat, however: The first poll of 2008 contains no California teams, which
occupied three of the top six spots in the final 2007 ranking. Those three schools
— Azusa Pacific (No. 2 in 2007), Fresno Pacific (No. 5) and Vanguard (No. 6)
— will play the Rush in southern California next week, along with another
ranked California team from 2007, Concordia (No. 18).
Xavier was 25th in the 2007 preseason, dropped out for three consecutive polls,
then returned to 25th for each of the final three polls. The Rush did not compete
in the spring of 2006 due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina and was 24th in the
final 2005 poll.
Xavier is 1-1 this year after splitting a pair at home in January against NCAA Division
I opponents. The Rush lost to Nicholls State, then defeated Southern.
Auburn Montgomery, winner of the past two NAIA national championships and four
of the past six, is No. 1 and received all 12 first-place votes. AUM was No. 1 in
every 2007 poll.
The next coaches poll will be announced Feb. 20. There will be seven polls
this season, with the final one released April 30.
