Despite two losses, Gold Nuggets stay in top 25

NEW ORLEANS — One week ago, the Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball team
was enjoying a No. 18 ranking — its highest position in three years — in the NAIA Division I coaches
poll.
On Wednesday the Gold Nuggets were clinging to their top-25 status. After consecutive
road losses this past week in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, Xavier dropped
into a 24th-place tie with Westminster (Utah) in the newest poll.
Xavier (17-5 overall, 7-3 GCAC) made the biggest move in either direction in this week's rankings.
The Nuggets lost 71-51 at GCAC leader Loyola, then 73-65 at William Carey this past week.
Loyola, which leads the GCAC by three games over Xavier and Mobile, moved up one
spot to No. 15.
Union (21-0) of Jackson, Tenn., maintained the No. 1 spot it has held
since the preseason. The Lady Bulldogs were a unanimous choice for the top spot
for the seventh consecutive ranking.
Xavier will play two more GCAC games this week: 5:30 p.m. Thursday
against SUNO (4-13, 0-10) at Delgado Community College Gym and 5 p.m. Saturday against Belhaven
at The Barn. Belhaven will be Xavier's first home opponent in three weeks.
The next coaches poll will be announced Feb. 13.
