Nuggets work overtime to win GCAC opener

JACKSON, Miss. — Erica Turnbull scored 22 points Thursday to tie her career high and lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 66-60 overtime women's basketball victory over Belhaven.

After Lurena Robinson's 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining in regulation gave Belhaven its only lead, 58-56, Turnbull made two free throws with 19 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Xavier never trailed in overtime after outscoring Belhaven 5-0 in the first four minutes.

The Gold Nuggets' Tiffany Norris scored 15 points to tie her career high. Xavier (11-2), ranked 21st in NAIA Division I, has a seven-game win streak and won its Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for the 14th consecutive time.

Robinson scored 15 points for Belhaven (4-6, 0-1), and Samantha Kirkwood had 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Xavier outshot Belhaven 46 to 32 percent from the floor. The Gold Nuggets won despite going 0-of-4 from 3-point range and a season-high 30 turnovers.

Xavier has won 10 straight and 25 of its last 26 meetings against Belhaven. The Nuggets' next game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday at GCAC opponent Spring Hill.
