MARSHALL, Texas — Mark Stewart scored a season-high 24 points, including the winning basket with 30 seconds remaining, to rally unbeaten Xavier University of Louisiana to a 75-74 men's basketball victory against Texas College in the Wiley Classic.

Stewart scored 15 second-half points and collected the last two in traffic on a drive to the basket. After the teams traded turnovers, Xavier's Dannie Woods preserved the victory by blocking Czyz Bennett's shot in the lane in the final seconds.

Alfred Williams scored 15 points, Jarrel Lake 11 and Woods 10 for Xavier (6-0), ranked 10th in the NAIA Division I coaches poll and fifth in Victory Sports Network's rankings. Lake and Cornelius Kennedy grabbed six rebounds each, and Shaun Dumas had five assists.

Xavier trailed by 13 points before cutting the Steers' lead to 39-34 by halftime. It was the third time in four games that Xavier won after trailing by 10 or more points.

"It was another great comeback win," Xavier Coach Dannton Jackson said. "Our defense produced some big stops at the end to put us in position to win."

Bennett scored 24 points, Ricky Smith 20 and Mondrae McCray 10 for Texas College (5-3). Smith grabbed seven rebounds.

Texas College outshot Xavier 50 to 46 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Gold Rush 33-30, but Xavier outscored the Steers 16-9 from the line. Stewart, Xavier's career leader in free-throw accuracy, made all eight of his attempts from the line.

The 6-0 start is Xavier's first since the 2002-03 season.

Xavier will play NAIA No. 19 Wiley at 6 p.m. Saturday in the final game of the Wiley Classic. Wiley defeated Loyola 76-70 in the other Friday game.
