AUSTIN, Texas — Former New Orleanian D.J. Augustin scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half Friday to lead Texas to an 87-56 men's basketball exhibition victory against Xavier University of Louisiana at the Erwin Center.

Mark Stewart scored 17 points — he was 5 of 6 from 3-point range — and Alfred Williams scored 10 for Xavier, which will begin the regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at The Barn against Wesley (Miss.).

Xavier, ranked 10th in NAIA Division I, spent nearly two minutes with the lead in the first half, including a 20-17 advantage when Stewart made a 3-pointer with 12:29 remaining. But Augustin answered with a 3-pointer 14 seconds later to start the Longhorns on a 12-0 run that gave them the lead for good.

Damion James scored 18 points, Gary Johnson 13 and Justin Mason 10 for Texas.

The Longhorns outshot the Gold Rush 48 to 41 percent from the floor and had a 48-25 rebound advantage. Xavier shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half but still trailed 49-37 at the break.
