Xavier's Opata reaches singles final
For immediate release . . . September 28, 2007
ATLANTA — Xavier University of Louisiana sophomore Anastesia Opata won two matches
Friday to reach the women's singles A-flight final of the HBCU National Tennis
Championships.
Opata, a transfer from Washington State, defeated top-seeded Monika Musilova
of Bethune-Cookman 6-4, 4-1, retired, in the quarterfinals, then beat
Alcorn State's Swetha Devaraj 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Two Xavier women's doubles teams — Opata and Dominique Bell and Colleen McArthur
and Yuliem Dominguez — reached the semifinals.
Xavier's Matthew Walker reached the consolation final of the men's singles
C-flight by beating Bethune-Cookman's Terry Powell 8-3 in the quarterfinals
Hampton's Marcelo Reda 5-0, retired, in the semifinals.
Southern University's Kathryn Curtis reached the women's singles B-flight
final by defeating McArthur 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Dominguez
7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals.
