Wallis joins Xavier as head athletics trainer

  NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has hired Melvin Wallis as its head athletics trainer, Athletics Director Dennis Cousin announced Friday.

Wallis' position will be funded through an agreement between Xavier and Ochsner Health System's sports medicine division.

Wallis, 29, is a native of Houma, La. He received his bachelor's degree from Nicholls State University in 2005 and his master's degree from Middle Tennessee State University in May.

His professional experience includes an internship with the New Orleans Saints during the summer of 2005, graduate assistant trainer at Middle Tennessee from 2005-07 and student assistant trainer at Nicholls from 2002-05. Wallis worked with Middle Tennessee's football, softball and track and field teams and with Nicholls' football and men's and women's basketball teams.

Wallis has earned National Athletic Trainers Association board certification and is an NATA member. He replaces Christie Henning, Xavier's trainer during the 2006-07 school year.

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The Xavier Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets compete in Division I of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) as a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC). Xavier fields men's and women's teams in basketball, cross country and tennis.
