St. Amant's Boyd signs with Nuggets

NEW ORLEANS — Shayla Boyd of St. Amant High School signed a women's basketball scholarship Wednesday with Xavier University of Louisiana.

Boyd is a 5-foot-6 guard and a resident of Gonzales, La. She earned honorable mention on the Class 5A All- State team each of the past two seasons and averaged 21.5 points per game her senior year. Boyd scored in double figures in every game as a senior, including five 30-point games and a high of 39.

"Shayla is a talented combo guard," Xavier Coach Bo Browder said. "She has great leadership skills on the court. She will come in here this fall and compete for the starting job at point guard."

Boyd was Academic All-State as a senior and a two-time All-District 3-5A selection.

Boyd is the second Xavier women's basketball signee for 2007-08. Signing in the fall was 6-foot forward Johnna Williams of Prairieville, La., and Dutchtown High School. Boyd and Williams were opponents in 3-5A. Xavier was 23-12 this past season and tied a program record by reaching the NAIA Division I National Tournament for the sixth consecutive time.
