Xavier loses both matches in Region XIII tourney

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's women and men lost first-round
matches Friday in the NAIA Region XIII Tennis Tournament at the University
of New Orleans Wow Cafe Tennis Center.
The Gold Nuggets (15-7), ranked 22nd, lost 5-4 to eighth-ranked
Brenau. The Gold Rush (12-10), ranked 25th, lost 5-2 to No. 19 Shorter.
Xavier's women lost all three doubles matches against Brenau but got
singles victories from Dominique Bell, Yuliem Dominguez, Angelina Callis
and Alexandria Broussard to tie the match at four points apiece. Brenau
clinched the dual when Diana Cardenas rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the
second set and defeated Jihanna Mughnee 6-3, 7-5.
Seventh-ranked Berry defeated Brenau 5-3 in the semifinals and will
play three-time defending NAIA champion Auburn Montgomery for the title at
10 a.m. Saturday. AUM, winner of 109 of its last 111 matches, beat
Shorter 6-0 in the semifinals.
Xavier's men scored their points against Shorter when Cameron Knowles
and Miroslav Vukicevic defeated Fernando Campos and Danish Ahmad 8-4 in
doubles and Mario Myles beat Campos 6-4, 6-4 in singles.
Top-ranked Auburn Montgomery, the 2006 NAIA champion, will play
12th-ranked Lee for the men's title at 10 a.m. Saturday. AUM beat Shorter 5-0,
and Lee rallied to beat No. 10 Berry 5-4 in the semifinals.
In the other first-round matches, Shorter's women defeated Lee 5-4, and
Lee's men beat Spring Hill 6-2.
