Xavier men beat NAIA No. 24 Oklahoma Baptist
For immediate release . . . March 31, 2007

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana's men's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 5-0 victory Saturday against Oklahoma Baptist, ranked 24th in the NAIA.

Xavier's 11th-ranked women also defeated Oklahoma Baptist 5-3 to end their three-match skid.

Vusumzi Kempele clinched the men's dual with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Andrew Sharp. Xavier's Mario Myles and Terry Richardson defeated Tim Landvatter and Bruno Scacalossi 9-8 (7-4) in doubles after trailing 7-2 and saving a match point.

It was the second victory in 10 days for the Gold Rush (8-9) against a ranked NAIA opponent. Xavier defeated No. 25 Oklahoma Christian 5-0 on March 22.

In the women's match the Gold Nuggets (10-6) forfeited two points for the fourth consecutive time because of Dominique Bell's absence — Bell returned home this week to Jackson, Miss., after the death of her brother — but Xavier won five of six matches and clinched the dual when Angelina Callis beat Camber Robinett 6-1, 6-1.

"I was very disappointed in the effort yesterday against Shorter," Xavier Coach Alan Green said. "We had to regroup and talk about it. Today we came out fired up and ready to play."

The Nuggets' next match will start at 3 p.m. Tuesday, two hours earlier than originally announced, at City Park Tennis Center against Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opponent Mobile. Xavier's next men's matches will be at home April 12 against GCAC opponents Tougaloo and Belhaven.
