MOBILE, Ala. — The Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis team
defeated NAIA No. 25 Oklahoma Christian 5-0 Thursday for its first victory
of the season against a ranked opponent.
Mario Myles clinched the Gold Rush victory with a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Adalid
Martinez, the NAIA's 33rd-ranked singles player. Myles and Terry
Richardson defeated 16th-ranked Travis Truax and Derek Viljoen 8-2 in doubles.
Three singles matches were not completed because of Oklahoma Christian's schedule —
the Eagles (2-9) played Spring Hill during the afternoon, then will travel Friday
for more matches this weekend — and a fourth match never started.
"This was a big win for us," Xavier Coach Alan Green said. "It was importanrt for
us to set the tone and come out strong in doubles. Oklahoma Christian is very good in doubles,
and I was proud of the way we played and how we beat them. It was good to see Mario close his match and
got everybody off the court. That's his biggest win of the season."
Xavier (7-6) has consecutive victories for the first time since Feb. 10.
Both Xavier teams will resume competition on Thursday, March 29 in the
Small College Blue-Gray Tournament at Montgomery, Ala.
