Both Xavier teams lose 5-4 to Berry
For immediate release . . . March 11, 2007

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Berry won the final five men's singles matches and the final two women's singles matches Sunday to rally for 5-4 tennis victories against Xavier University of Louisiana.

It was the second consecutive day that Xavier's women, ranked ninth in the NAIA, lost 5-4 to a ranked opponent. On Saturday the Nuggets lost to 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle. Berry is No. 7

"What's that old saying? So close and yet so far away," Xavier Coach Alan Green said. "That summed up our day."

It was especially frustrating for Xavier's men, who were on the verge of earning their first victory of the season against a ranked team.

The Gold Rush (5-6) swept the three doubles matches — Mario Myles and Terry Richardson defeated the NAIA's eighth-ranked Christian Jaeckle and Andre Ferreira 9-8 — and led 4-0 after Vusumzi Kempele won his No. 5 singles match 6-3, 6-0 against Daniel Aguilon. The Rush moved closer to winning the dual when Miroslav Vukicevic and Cameron Knowles won the first sets of their singles matches. "It looked like we were cruising," Green said.

But those were the last sets the Rush would win.

Eight-ranked Berry (5-3) rallied and won the match when Marcelo Peterlini defeated Knowles 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Peterlini broke Knowles' serve in the 11th game of the final set.

Xavier's women lost two of three doubles matches to seventh-ranked Berry (6-1) but tied the match when Angelina Callis, winning at No. 3 singles for third consecutive day, defeated Anja Chan 6-2, 6-2. Victories by Alexandra Broussard and Jihanna Mughnee gave the Gold Nuggets (7-3) a 4-3 lead. But Berry rallied again, with Kirstin Ruffner defeating Colleen McArthur 6-2, 6-3 in a battle of freshmen at No. 4 for the deciding point.

"I'm pretty disappointed in how we finished," Green said. "I guess that's because our expectations are so much higher. We didn't have chances to defeat ranked teams in the past. Now we do. We've just got to find a way to put those matches away when we have the chance. Our women lost two nail-biters to ranked teams, and we could've won both. We're a much better team than we were two years ago. It's nowhere close."

Xavier, the leader in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conferece standings — both teams are 3-0 — will travel to Mobile, Ala., for conference matches Saturday. The Nuggets will play Mobile at 9 a.m., and the Nuggets and Rush will play Spring Hill at 2 p.m.
