Embry-Riddle sweeps Xavier tennis teams
For immediate release . . . March 10, 2007

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The good news for the Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis team was defeating three of the NAIA's top 40 singles players Saturday.

The bad news was that those triumphs were not enough to carry the No. 9 Gold Nuggets to a dual-match victory against No. 7 Embry-Riddle. Xavier won only one other match and lost 5-4 to the Eagles.

Embry-Riddle's fourth-ranked men defeated Xavier 8-1.

Xavier (7-2) lost two of the three doubles matches but roared into the lead when the top half of its singles lineup, Dominique Bell, Yuliem Dominguez and Angelina Callis, produced straight-set victories. Bell, ranked 14th in singles, defeated NAIA No. 9 Hana Im 6-3, 6-2. Dominguez beat No. 28 Natalie Anaya 6-2, 6-3. And Callis defeated No. 40 Lindsey Kurtz 7-5, 6-2. But the Nuggets produced no more victories, even after Colleen McArthur and Jihanna Mughnee won the first sets of their matches.

It was the the second victory in three days for Embry-Riddle (5-5) against a top-10 team. The Eagles defeated No. 10 Brenau 5-4 Thursday.

Xavier (5-5) scored its only point of the men's match when Vusumzi Kempele defeated Blake Hollis 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. But the Eagles (9-1) dropped only one other set in the dual and cruised to their eighth consecutive victory.

Xavier will conclude its Florida trip with men's and women's duals at 10 a.m. CDT Sunday against Berry at Daytona Beach. Berry's men are ranked eighth, and the women are seventh.
