Nuggets' tennis team reaches NAIA top 10 for first time
For immediate release . . . March 8, 2007

NEW ORLEANS — For the first time in the program's history, the Xavier University women's tennis team is ranked among the NAIA's top 10.

The Gold Nuggets (6-1) climbed Wednesday from 12th to ninth in the poll. It's the first time a Xavier team has reached an NAIA top 10 since women's basketball was 10th in the Division I poll of Feb. 8, 2005.

The Xavier men's tennis team, No. 25 in the preseason, received votes but did not make the top 25 for the second consecutive poll. The Gold Rush (5-3) is tied for 27th.

"I saw we were ranked No. 9, and I couldn't believe it," said fourth-year Coach Alan Green, who added that Xavier's women never had been ranked before his arrival. "I was amazed. I started thinking how far we came to be a top-10 team and how all the hard work paid off. I'm proud of our women, and I hope we can continue to get better."

Both Xavier teams will play three dual matches in Daytona Beach, Fla., this weekend, and all three opposing schools have ranked men's and women's teams.

At 1 p.m. Friday, Xavier will play Webber International's 20th-ranked men and 25th-ranked women. At 10 a.m. Saturday, Xavier will play Embry-Riddle's fourth-ranked men and 11th-ranked women. Finally, after setting their watches ahead one hour for daylight-saving time, the Nuggets and Rush will conclude their challenging weekend by playing Berry's eighth-ranked men and seventh-ranked women at 10 a.m. Sunday. All times are Eastern, one hour ahead of New Orleans.

"The talent is better. The recruiting is better. We play much tougher schedules," Green said in comparing Xavier women's tennis to the seasons before he became coach. "You have to play good teams and beat teams ranked ahead of you to get yourself ranked."
