ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

OLATHE, Kan. — The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
announced on Monday that Sister Grace Mary Flickinger of Xavier University (La.) is the recipient
of the 2006-07 Wally Schwartz Award. The award, initiated by the Faculty Athletic
Representative Association (FARA), honors past NAIA Vice President of Legislative
Services Wally Schwartz and annually recognizes Conference, Regional and National
Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR) of the Year. Award winners exemplify the
loyalty, enthusiasm and honesty that Wally Schwartz displayed during and beyond
his time at the NAIA.

Sister Grace Mary's resume exudes a dedication to the NAIA that spans countless
years in a myriad of areas within the Association. Currently serving as the
chair of the National Coordinating Committee, a member of the Gender Equity
Committee and registering more than 20 years of service as a FAR at Xavier,
her insight is often sought out by the NAIA on a number of matters. Sister
Grace Mary has been recognized by the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC)
for her dedication to athletics and her unparalleled loyalty to the furtherance
of student-athletes.
"It has been my honor to know and to work with Sister Grace Mary for the past
three decades," said Xavier University of Louisiana President Dr. Norman C. Francis.
"She is one of our cherished faculty members who mirror the qualities of a true
professional in service to students and the institution."
Firm in her principles and constant in her efforts she finds workable solutions
in a number of situations. This past year has been especially demonstrative of
her skills. When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and Xavier University in 2005,
Sister Grace Mary remained on campus counseling and supporting her students.
"I had the personal and professional pleasure of working with Wally Schwartz for many years.
I benefited from his knowledge of the rules, understanding of real-world athletics and
assessments of individuals," said Commissioner and Eligibility Chair of the GCAC
Thomas Howell. "Sister Grace Mary is the kind of individual whom he most appreciated and respected."
Sister Grace Mary has been on Xavier's campus for nearly 40 years as a professor of biology,
and she is what many describe as incredible. Her motto "only the best" is what she
instills in student-athletes as she challenges them to reach their highest potential.
"It is a pleasure to work with Sister Grace Mary. Her tireless dedication to NAIA
students makes her an invaluable asset to the Association," said NAIA Director of
Legislative Service Israel Negron. "She is a treasure."
The 2006-07 Wally Schwartz Award will be formally presented to Sister Grace Mary during
the 66th Annual NAIA National Convention held in Kansas City, Mo. Sister Grace Mary
will accept the award on Sunday, March 18 at the NAIA Awards Banquet.
