For immediate release . . . March 1, 2007

NEW ORLEANS — Record-setting guard Mark Stewart of Xavier University of Louisiana was selected Louisiana Player of the Week in men's basketball for Feb. 20-26 by a Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel.

Stewart, a 6-foot-1 junior from Destrehan, La., led Xavier in scoring in road victories against William Carey and Dillard to help the Gold Rush improve to 13-1 since Jan. 11 and grab a share of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship. Stewart scored 20 points and had a career-high five assists Thursday to help Xavier defeat William Carey 86-80 and hand the Crusaders their first home loss of the season.

Stewart then scored 22 points Saturday in an 88-81 overtime win at GCAC and city rival Dillard. Stewart made two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, then hit a 3-pointer at 3:07 of overtime to put Xavier ahead to stay and tie Dale Montgomery's Xavier career record of 185 3-pointers.
