Women remain unbeaten, men lose twice

NEW ORLEANS — The Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis team defeated Alcorn State 6-3 Saturday at City Park Tennis Center to remain unbeaten.

The Gold Nuggets, ranked 13th in the NAIA, won five of six singles matches and improved to 5-0. It was their second dual-match victory of the year against an NCAA Division I opponent.

Xavier's men (4-2), ranked 25th in the NAIA, suffered their first two losses of the season, 5-4 against Alcorn and 6-0 against Florida A&M.

Xavier's Dominique Bell, ranked 14th in NAIA women's singles, defeated Swetha Deveraj 6-2, 3-4 (retired) and teamed with Colleen McArthur for an 8-1 doubles victory against Avernelle Holder and Martina Garda.

Xavier's men split their six singles matches against Alcorn, but the Braves won two of three doubles matches to win the dual. Alcorn's Juan Marcos Hernandez and Aziz Abdurazzarov built a 5-0 lead against Cameron Knowles and Miroslav Vukicevic at No. 2 doubles and held on for a 9-7 victory.

In the Gold Rush's second dual of the day, Florida A&M clinched the dual by winnning all six singles matches.

Florida A&M also defeated Alcorn 4-1 on Saturday.

The next match for Xavier's men and women will start at 2 p.m. Thursday against Prairie View A&M at City Park.
