Xavier men and women defeat Spring Hill
For immediate release . . . February 3, 2007

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana defeated Spring Hill in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's and women's tennis matches Saturday at City Park Tennis Center. The Gold Rush defeated the Badgers 9-0, and the Gold Nuggets defeated the Lady Badgers 8-1.

Both Xavier teams are 2-0, and both Spring Hill teams are 0-1. Xavier's teams combined to win 28 of 30 sets and nearly 75 percent of the games. Gold Rush junior Miroslav Vukicevic didn't lose a game in singles or doubles, and teammates Thomas Fugate and Cameron Knowles dropped one game apiece.

"It was cold today, but both teams had to deal with that," Xavier Coach Alan Green said. "Our men came out with something to prove because Spring Hill won the conference championship last year. They want to get that title. The women were solid all the way through.

"I thought this match would be a little tougher, and I'm sure it will be when we travel to Spring Hill next month (March 17)."

Abbey Angelle, at women's No. 4 singles, defeated Colleen McArthur 6-4, 6-1 to score Spring Hill's only point.

Xavier's men and women will play a pair of GCAC opponents next Saturday at City Park — Tougaloo at 10 a.m. and Belhaven at 2 p.m.
