For immediate release . . . January 28, 2007

BATON ROUGE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana opened the spring portion of its men's and women's tennis schedules with dual-match victories against Southern University on Sunday.

The Gold Rush defeated the Jaguars 6-1, and the Gold Nuggets beat the Lady Jaguars 5-2.

Xavier earned the doubles point in each match, and the squads combined for nine victories in 11 singles matches. Xavier's men picked up another point with a default at No. 6 singles because Southern competed with five men.

The Rush recorded a pair of comeback singles victories. Miroslav Vukicevic defeated Bino Rasedisa 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, and Cameron Knowles defeated Elvis Espinal 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

The Nuggets won the top three singles flights in their dual. No. 1 Dominique Bell — a two-time GCAC Player of the Year and ranked 14th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NAIA fall women's singles rankings — defeated Megan Wiltz 6-2, 6-4.

Of Xavier's five freshmen, two won singles and doubles matches. Knowles did it for the men, and Angelina Callis did it for the women.

"We were ready to play," fourth-year Xavier Coach Alan Green said. "The hard work we've done up to this point showed in the doubles. I was happy to see our men's team pull out the victory, and our top three women took control and never gave Southern a chance to get back in their match."

Xavier's men and women will play Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opponent Spring Hill at 11 a.m. Saturday at City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans.
