SUNO rallies late to stop Nuggets' streak

NEW ORLEANS — Lateefa Marshall scored 11 of her 16 points in the
second half Thursday to help SUNO rally for a 56-54 Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference women's basketball victory against NAIA No. 21 Xavier University of New Orleans at Delgado
Gym.
Sabrina Johnson added 13 points for the Lady Knights (10-4 overall, 6-3
GCAC), who snapped Xavier's eight-game win streak. The loss was the
Gold Nuggets' sixth in their last 60 conference games.
SUNO rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 10 minutes and
took the lead for good at 54-52 on Disha Leonard's basket with 2:14
remaining. From that point Xavier (15-6, 7-1) scored only one basket, missed
three shots and one free throw and committed three turnovers.
Erica Turnbull scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds
for the Nuggets. Jarryn Cleaves amd Dominee Matthews scored 11 points
apiece.
SUNO outshot Xavier 33 to 28 percent from the floor. The Nuggets had a
66-35 rebound advantage — 32-11 on the offensive end — but committed
22 turnovers, nine more than the Lady Knights.
Xavier's next game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday at The Barn against
Dillard. SUNO's next game will start at 1 p.m. Saturday at Delgado
against LSU-Shreveport. Both matchups are GCAC contests.
