MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana's Mark Stewart tied his career high of 28 points Thursday, but the Gold Rush lost 70-66 to Spring Hill in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball game.

Stewart scored 17 points in the second half for Xavier (7-7 overall, 0-4 GCAC), which lost for the fourth straight time and has dropped six of its last seven games. Stewart made seven 3-point field goals, a career high and one less than Percy Bland's 1989 school record.

Shaun Dumas scored 13 points for Xavier. Aaron Burgess and Cornelius Kennedy led the Rush with seven rebounds apiece — Kennedy's total was a career high — and Stewart, Dumas, Kennedy and Alfred Williams each had two assists.

Cash Covington scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half for Spring Hill (7-3, 3-0), and Marcus Coleman scored 16.

Xavier rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit to take a 30-26 lead by halftime.

Xavier's next game will start at 3 p.m. Saturday at The Barn against GCAC opponent Loyola. The starting time was moved up four hours to avoid a conflict with the New Orleans Saints' NFL playoff game in the Superdome that night against Philadelphia.
