Gold Rush loses at Tougaloo in GCAC opener

TOUGALOO, Miss. — Kevin McCoy scored 24 points Thursday to lead
Tougaloo to a 78-59 men's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
It was the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
Mark Stewart scored 20 points, and Alfred Williams had 11 points and
seven rebounds for Xavier (7-4).
McCoy was one of five Bulldogs in double figures. Brandon Caston scored
13 points, and Keithdrick Harris had 12. William Jones had 10 points,
11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Tougaloo (2-6) led 38-20 after 16 minutes and 38-26 at halftime.
Cornelius Kennedy's three-point play with 13:49 remaining cut the Bulldogs'
lead to 48-42, but Xavier never got closer.
Tougaloo outshot Xavier 55 to 36 percent from the floor. The losing
margin was Xavier's largest of the season and came four days after its
biggest winning margin, 92-66 against Wiley. Xavier lost for the
third time in four games.
Xavier's next game will start at 7 p.m. Saturday against GCAC opponent
Mobile in The Barn. It will be the Gold Rush's first home game in more
than a month.
