Langston ends Nuggets' streak in The Barn

NEW ORLEANS — Matalya McBath-Belvin scored 19 of her season-high 32 points
in the second half Friday to lead Langston to a 72-66 women's basketball victory
against Xavier University of Louisiana in the Xavier Classic.
The Lady Lions (6-3) took the lead for good with 10 minutes remaining and ended
Xavier's 39-game win streak in The Barn. Langston and Texas College both were
2-0 in the six-team event.
McBath-Belvin, a 5-foot-3 senior guard, also had seven assists, six rebounds
and four steals. She was 10 of 18 from the floor and 10 of 13 from the line.
Teneisha McKinney added 11 points and Brittani Williams 10 for Langston, which
has a three-game winning streak.
Erica Turnbull led Xavier (5-3) with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Alissa
Thompson scored a season-high 11 points. But leading scorer Jarryn Cleaves
had just seven points — the first time this season she didn't reach
double figures — and was 2 of 14 from the floor.
Before Friday the Gold Nuggets' last loss in The Barn was 64-62 to Southern
University of New Orleans on Feb. 7, 2002, and the last non-conference loss
was 63-58 to Houston Baptist on Dec. 1, 2001.
Langston limited Xavier to 32-percent shooting from the floor, including 2
of 18 from 3-point range.
McBath-Belvin scored 57 points during this event. She had 25 points, seven rebounds
and five assists Thursday in an 83-70 victory against Tougaloo.

Erica Delley's basket with 1:41 remaining gave the Lady Steers (4-3) the victory
against the Lady Bulldogs (1-3).
Neither team scored after Delley's basket. Tougaloo missed four
field-goal attempts and committed a turnover in the final 71 seconds.
Romanita Whitaker led Texas College (4-3) with 19
points, and Delley had 18 points and 18 rebounds.
Amber Johnson made five 3-pointers and scored 18 points
for Tougaloo, which has a three-game losing streak. Travalyn Smith had 15 points and
nine rebounds, and Keisha Carter had 11 points and five assists.
Texas College led 41-36 at halftime. Johnson scored six points during a 12-0
run which gave Tougaloo a 61-59 lead with 4:49 remaining.

Shantrell Matthews scored 15 points, and Orlandrea Moore had 13 points and 13 rebounds
to help the Golden Bears (7-2) snap a two-game losing streak.
Kierra Wilkins added 12 points, and Marche Westray had nine points and eight assists for
West Virginia Tech, which led 40-22 at halftime.
The double-double was Moore's second in as many games. She had 12 points and 12
rebounds Thursday against Xavier.
Crystal Marcial scored 16 points for Dillard (0-6), and
Roshawnda Bolton and Sandra Nweke scored 11 apiece.
Six-foot-9 Rita Besa made a pair of free throws — her only points of the game
— with 7:21 remaining to give the Golden Bears their biggest lead, 68-37.
West Virginia Tech outshot Dillard 43 to 30 percent from the floor.
