Cleaves leads Gold Nuggets in comeback victory

NEW ORLEANS — Jarryn Cleaves scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half Friday to rally Xavier University of Louisiana to an 87-81 exhibition women's basketball victory against the Houston Jaguars at The Barn.
Rynika Hebert scored 12 points, and Carla Robinson had 11 for the Gold Nuggets, who trailed 48-35 at halftime and were still down 13 at 64-51 with 13 minutes remanining.
Cleaves, elected to the preseason all-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team earlier in the day, made consecutive 3-point field goals to key a decisive 14-4 run which covered nearly four minutes. The second of those treys tied the score at 72 with 6:05 remaining, then Cleaves passed to Carla Robinson for a 3-pointer which put Xavier ahead to stay, 75-74, with 5:29 remaining.
Cleaves finished with six 3-pointers, and the Nuggets outscored the Jaguars 30-12 from behind the arc.
Kojavona Hamilton, Xavier's other preseason all-GCAC selection, collected nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Amber Cunningham scored 21 points to lead the Jaguars, a team of former collegians in the opener of a 13-game exhibition tour. Umeki Webb had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Thandi Masimini had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Houston outshot Xavier 52 to 41 percent from the floor, but the Nuggets limited the Jaguars to 42 percent in the second half after Houston shot 60 percent before halftime.
Xavier will open its regular season next Friday against Westmont in the Robert Morris Las Vegas Classic. The Nuggets' home opener will start at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 against Texas College in The Barn.
