Nuggets picked 3rd in GCAC preseason basketball poll

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has been picked to finish third in the 2006-07 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball standings, according to a preseason coaches poll announced Wednesday.

The Gold Nuggets, who did not play this past season because of the effects of Hurricane Katrina, received three first-place votes and 68 points. Mobile, which shared the 2005-06 regular-season championship with William Carey and won the GCAC tournament, earned four first-place votes and 76 points. William Carey collected 70 points and the other three first-place votes and finished second in the voting.

Xavier will play host to Mobile on Jan. 6 and William Carey on Jan. 22.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their teams. Nine points were awarded for a first-place vote.

Xavier won or shared nine of 12 GCAC regular-season championships from 1993-2005, including a conference-record five in a row from 1993-98.

Xavier, 29-5 in 2004-05, will play the Houston Jaguars in an exhibition game at 6 p.m. in The Barn on Oct. 27 before opening the regular season at 6 p.m. (4 p.m. PST) on Nov. 3 against Westmont in the Robert Morris Las Vegas Classic. The Gold Rush's regular-season home opener will be Nov. 10 against Texas College at 5:30 p.m., and the first GCAC game will be Jan. 4 at Tougaloo.
