Vaval-Desse, Callis lose in semifinals

ATLANTA — Xavier University of Louisiana tennis players Mikhail Vaval-Desse and Angelina Callis won quarterfinal matches but lost in the semifinals of their singles flights Friday in the HBCU National Championships at the Sugar Creek and Stone Mountain tennis centers.
Vaval-Desse defeated second-seeded Luis Gomez of Bethune-Cookman 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the men's C-flight before losing 6-3, 6-3 to Florida A&M's Simba Happy in the semifinals.
Callis, in the women's B-flight, defeated Prairie View's Melissa Guerrier 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before losing 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals to Bethune-Cookman's top-seeded Lucia Polakova.
The tournament will conclude Saturday.
