NEW ORLEANS — Men's cross country runners Chase Guidry of Baton Rouge, La., and Joe Drexler-Dreis of Shorewood, Wis., have signed grants-in-aid to compete for Xavier University of Louisiana.
Guidry was a second-team all-parish runner for Woodlawn High School the past two seasons. He ran three miles in 16 minutes, 43.53 seconds to finish 24th in the Class 5A state meet in November. He ran 800 meters in 2:04.80 to place fourth in the District 3-5A track meet in April.
Drexler-Dreis is a transfer from Miami (Fla.), where he was a freshman in 2005-06. He helped Shorewood High finish second in the 4 x 800-meter relay in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Activities Association state meet his senior year. His best times include 50.3 for 400 meters and 1:56 in the 800.
Xavier's men and women will open their 2006 season Sept. 9 in the Southern University Invitational at Baton Rouge, La. The Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets did not compete in 2005 because of Hurricane Katrina but finished second in both divisions of the 2004 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championships.
