ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

Next:
The Gold Rush awaits the start of the 2009-10 regular season in late October
or early November. Xavier will have to replace a pair of 1,000-point career scorers,
guard Shaun Dumas and forward Kelechi Okoroha, both seniors in 2008-09.
The Record:
19 wins, 12 losses in 2008-09, including 11-7 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference to tie for fourth place.
The Gold Rush finished 24-10 (12-6 GCAC, third place) in 2007-08.
Most Recently:
Xavier lost 77-74 in overtime at Spring Hill in the quarterfinals of the GCAC Tournament on Thursday, March 5.
2008-09 Highlights:
• Senior point guard Shaun Dumas made the
NAIA Division I All-America third team for the second time in three seasons.
• Xavier won 68-49 at Alcorn State, an NCAA Division I member, on December 20. Xavier
counted the game as an exhibition, but Alcorn counted the game in its record and statistics.
• 4,321 fans attended the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crosstown Classic, a doubleheader at
New Orleans Arena involving the men's and women's teams of Xavier and Dillard. Attendance was
more than 150 percent higher than the previous season.
• The Gold Rush finished above .500 for the ninth consecutive season.
• Senior forward Kelechi Okoroha was chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District 6 second team in the college division — the only men's or women's basketball
player from an HBCU or the GCAC to be Academic All-District this season — and was the
Heritage Sports Radio Network National Player of the Week in Division II (Feb. 2-8).
• Senior guard Shaun Dumas was a two-time GCAC Player of the Week (Dec. 29-Jan. 4
and Jan. 12-18).
• Shaun Dumas (third time) and Kelechi Okoroha (first time) were chosen
to the coaches' All-GCAC team. Dumas is the fifth Gold Rush player to earn that
distinction three times.
• Shaun Dumas finished as the third player in 27 seasons to lead the
Gold Rush in scoring, assists and steals in the same year.
He averaged 14.7 points, 4.2 assists and 3.2 steals.
Dumas was second in NAIA Division I in steals per game through March 8.
He also tied Merlin Peters' Xavier record of 129 career games played.
• Xavier won on consecutive days to start a season for the first time
since 2003.
• Xavier started 5-0 for the second consecutive year and the fourth time in six seasons.
• Xavier started 6-0 in consecutive seasons for the first time since
doing it three straight times in 1938-39, 1939-40 and 1940-41.
• Xavier allowed less than 60 points in each of its first two games
for the first time since the 1956-57 season.
• The Gold Rush beat Paul Quinn 58-40 on December — Xavier's fewest points
allowed in a game since a 116-27 home victory over Wesley (Miss.) on Nov. 15, 2004.
• Xavier limited Czyz Bennett, a second-team NAIA All-American in
2007-08, to 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting in a 71-49 Gold Rush victory over Texas College on November 22.
• Xavier allowed less than 60 points in five consecutive games (Jan. 17-31) for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
• The Gold Rush played its earliest season opener and provided a thriller
to its fans on Halloween night. Xavier rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat
Southern Polytechnic 58-55 at The Barn.
