Gold Nuggets Tennis “ANOTHER CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP” The Tradition of Excellence Continues For the fifth straight year, the Xavier University of Louisiana athletic program has claimed a conference championship. This year, it was the men’s tennis program that went the distance, capturing its first title in school history, defeating Spring Hill to remain undefeated (10-0) in GCAC play. The women’s tennis team picked up their fourth consecutive conference championship by defeating Mobile and finished with an undefeated league record of 12-0. Ranked 14th in the NAIA, Gold Nuggets tennis is led by two-time Player of the Year Dominique Bell, a sophomore who ranks 30th in the country amongst women’s players. This season, the men can boast the GCAC Newcomer of the Year, Terry Richardson II, a freshman who was one of the top prep stars in the state of Georgia. Seeded sixth, the Gold Rush was hoping to earn an at-large bid to the national tournament, but had its quest cut short in Mount Berry, Ga., as it fell to third-seeded Lee College (TN) 5-2 at the NAIA Region XIII Tournament. The Rush completed the season with record of 16-10. The fifth-seeded Nuggets also were beaten in regional action by Berry College (GA), 5-1, but the women earned an at-large bid to the national tournament with their top 25 ranking, as of April 20. The NAIA final season rating, released on Wednesday, May 4, showed the Nuggets ranked 13th in the country. The NAIA National Tennis Tournament was played in Mobile, Ala., on May 16-20. The Gold Nuggets swept through round one, defeating NAIA Region XII champion Indiana University Southeast, 9-0. In round two, the Nuggets fell to third-ranked Brenau 5-0, wrapping up their season with a 22-8 overall record. Additionally, the tennis program had three student-athletes chosen as 2005 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars. They were Michelle Lang, Charel Middleton and Thomas Fugate.Bambi Hall |
