Belhaven women beat Tougaloo 6-3 in GCAC first round
MOBILE, Ala. — Belhaven won all three doubles matches Friday — two without losing a game — and went on to a 6-3 women's tennis victory against Tougaloo in the first round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
The victory advanced the fourth-seeded Lady Blazers (7-10) to a 3 p.m. Friday semifinal against top-seeded Xavier.
Belhaven's Neely Johnson and Mayra Prado defeated Eleysia Perkins and Rukiya Umoja 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Kristen Kelly and Mary Khris Young recorded the same score at No. 2 doubles against Carmen Burton and Charity Foster.
Belhaven and fifth-seeded Tougaloo (4-9) split six singles matches. Umoja defeated Prado 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 — Umoja's second victory in three attempts against Prado this season — but Johnson, Kelly and Young won in straight sets to help the Lady Blazers advance.
Belhaven avenged a 6-3 loss to Tougaloo from the 2008 opening round.
