Opening in 2012:
The Convocation Center
New home of XU men's basketball, women's basketball and women's volleyball
|
Xavier University of Louisiana
announced in late March 2011 plans for the construction of a 4,500-seat multipurpose facility,
the Convocation Center.
The facility will replace The Barn — Xavier's 1,300-seat
gymnasium which opened in 1937 — and become the new home of XU men's basketball,
women's basketball and women's volleyball.
The Convocation Center will be across Washington Avenue and near the main campus
on a site bounded by Short, Palm and Stroelitz streets. It will be dedicated on Nov. 3, 2012, followed
the first basketball games in the arena: Xavier's men vs. Morehouse at 1 p.m. and Xavier's
women vs. Johnson & Wales (Fla.) at 3 p.m. Permanent seating capacity in the Convocation
Center for basketball and volleyball is 3,817.
