In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

One of the best post-Katrina turnaround sports stories is happening at Interstate 10 and
Carrollton Avenue. In Xavier's first sports year post-Katrina, the school competed in six sports.
Xavier athletes won five conference championships (men's basketball, men's and women's tennis,
men's and women's cross country).
Xavier's women's basketball team finished second in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference but
still advanced to the NAIA national tournament for the sixth consecutive time.
Ironically, the one team that finished second may be the most compelling story.
Four starters on the women's basketball team were lost to season-ending injuries. Down
to seven players, Gold Nuggets coach Bo Browder held open tryouts to fill out his roster.

Besides Browder, the head coaches at Xavier are Dannton Jackson (men's basketball),
Joseph Moses (cross country) and Alan Green (tennis).
Athletic director Dennis Cousin said Xavier is planning to build a new 5,000-seat arena
on campus. Cousin said he hopes the building can be open in three years.
Xavier has always had notoriety for its pharmacy school. But in the days and months
after Katrina, the school was also teaching resilience.
Cousin gave credit for the school's bounce back to the administration led by Dr.
Norman Francis. Said Cousin, "Dr. Francis doesn't tell us what we can't do, but how we are gonna do it."
