Community Arts Minor
The Community Arts Minor is designed for students who want to learn how to use the arts as a tool for community development. The curriculum balances coursework and practical work experience in community arts. Core courses for the Community Arts Minor include:
ART 2600 Building Community through the Arts
In communities throughout the world, artists work alongside their fellow citizens – including city planners, school administrators and educators, health care providers, and elected officials – to improve the political, social, and economic status of their communities. Building Community through the Arts explores the theory and practice of community-based arts and the relationship between arts and community development. As part of their learning, students work in teams with artists and other partners on Home, New Orleans – a multi-disciplinary, art-and-community development project grounded in selected New Orleans neighborhoods. This course is offered jointly by Xavier, Tulane, and Dillard Universities.
ART 3200 Arts Trends and Policy
This course provides a critical overview of current theories, practices, and policies in the arts. Topics include current support systems for the arts (both non-profit and for profit), alternative ways of sharing art, and models of art impacting social policy.
Community Partnerships
CAP partners with community-based arts organizations on projects that bring high quality arts education to youth throughout the Greater New Orleans region. Offerings include after-school and summer programs for elementary, middle, and high school students.
