Mardi Gras Indian Arts

LEARN THE BASICS OF MARDI GRAS INDIAN COSTUME DESIGN: During hands-on sessions, students will learn how to imagine, design, and create a Mardi Gras Indian costume from start to finish.

MOVE BEYOND DESIGN: Lectures, video screenings, and conversations with guest speakers will help students understand the rich costume and parade traditions of Mardi Gras Indians, including Native American and African-Caribbean influences.

  • The Saturday Arts Program is open to youth ages 11-14. Every Saturday from March 3, 2012 to June 2, 2012, between the hours of 1 pm and 5 pm students will create Mardi Gras Indian appliques with Big Chief Darryl Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indian Tribe. Program will be located at The Art Village of Xavier University, 3520 Pine St.

    Presently recruiting participants. Registration ends February 25, 2012. Orientation is Saturday February 25, 2012 between 1 pm and 3 pm at the Art Village of Xavier University, 3520 Pine St.

    Tuition for the program is $20. Need-based scholarships are available.

  • The Summer Program is open to youth ages 11-14. Presently recruiting participants for pending 2012 Summer Mardi Gras Indian Arts Program. Scheduled to run from June 4, 2012 through July 27, 2012, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Art Village of Xavier University, located at 3520 Pine St.
