About the Community Arts Program
The Community Arts Program (CAP) began in 1999 as a way of cultivating the expertise of artists, educators, students, and community members to improve arts training for youth in New Orleans. CAP projects help youth who have been labeled "at risk" feel more positive about their status in the community and place in the world by:
- Offering students opportunities to acquire arts skills and knowledge;
- Helping students discover viable career opportunities in the arts; and
- Demonstrating to students how they can use the arts to build up the neighborhoods they call home.
Through CAP, the Department of Art now also offers a Minor in Community Arts for students who want to learn the theory and practice of community building through the arts. Students interested in the Minor should contact the CAP Director or their faculty advisor.
