Mission Statement

Xavier is a historically black university with a unique Catholic character. The University’s ultimate purpose is the promotion of a more just and humane society. To this end, Xavier prepares its students to assume leadership roles in society. This preparation takes place in a pluralistic learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including teaching, research, and community service.

History:

Xavier was founded in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, who dedicated their lives to serving Native and African Americans. Today Xavier is nationally recognized for academic excellence. Xavier graduates can be found in virtually every state and in many countries. Xavier maintains a historic role in supporting the aspirations and development of the African American community.

Location:

The University lies in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, one of the most colorful and dynamic cities in the world. New Orleans demonstrates unity in diversity through its music, festivals, food, art, sports, and, most of all, people.

Accreditation:

Xavier University of Louisiana is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097. Telephone 404-679-4501) to award bachelors, masters, and the Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. Xavier is also accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the State of Louisiana Department of Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.

The Campus:

Recent additions to the campus such as the multi-purpose University Center, the St. Martin de Porres Residence Hall, the Norman C. Francis Academic/ Science Complex and the Library Resource Center give the impression of a very new campus. Yet earlier buildings of Gothic design give a feeling of permanence and history. Surrounded by shade trees, these architectural landmarks are fondly remembered by generations of Xavier graduates. All residential students live in modern residence halls with pleasant living quarters and easy access to recreational facilities.

Enrollment:

Xavier currently enrolls more than 4,000 students, of whom more than 3,000 are undergraduates. Approximately 80 percent of Xavier’s students are African American.

Faculty:

Xavier has a culturally and educationally diverse faculty of more than 200 full-time members, and a student/ faculty ratio of about 16 to 1. Nearly 90 percent of the faculty hold terminal degrees.

Academic Programs:

Xavier offers a broad range of academic majors for the Bachelor of Arts, Science or Music degrees. The College of Pharmacy offers a 6-year program (two years pre-pharmacy plus four years pharmacy) leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The Graduate School offers the Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Theology, and Master of Science degrees.

Campus Life:

Xavier students are encouraged to be active and involved in campus life, and the University provides an array of services, resources and co-curricular programs to enrich students’ experience. Students may choose from student government, intramural sports, fraternities and sororities, and many special interest organizations.

Athletics:

As part of the overall development of its students, Xavier supports an outstanding program of athletic activities, including intercollegiate basketball, tennis, volleyball and cross country. The University also offers extensive intramural competitive and recreational sports. Xavier is a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, which is affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Admissions:

Admissions decisions are made without regard to religion, sex, race, creed, color, national origin or handicap. A completed application includes the application form, high school transcript, SAT or ACT scores, and guidance counselor recommendation.

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid. In fact, 90 percent of the students attending Xavier receive some financial aid or scholarship. Xavier has traditionally offered the opportunity of a college education to academically qualified students, regardless of the financial resources of the student or the student’s family.

Special Programs:

Xavier offers a number of special higher education programs, such as cooperative projects with other schools, exchange programs, career planning and job placement, internships, accelerated learning, ROTC, and pre-professional programs for law, health, medicine and dentistry.
