Pass It On
Kerry Sterling embodies
Xavier’s “Pass It On”spirit of showing gratitude by conscientiously
passing along that which you have gained. Sterling grew up near Xavier and
kept a watchful eye on the campus. “I saw the energy at Xavier and
I always wanted to know what was going on,”he recalls. Early on, Sterling
was uncertain he would attend Xavier, but it impressed him that the University
never scratched him from its mailing list.
These days, you'll find
Kerry Sterling, Xavier Class of ’97, creatively driving home biology
lessons at his alma mater - for example, having his students role-playing
protons, neutrons and electrons. “Xavier,”Sterling says, “made
an indelible impression on me. I tell people that Xavier may not have been
my first choice, but Xavier made me its first choice. I couldn't pass
up the opportunity to come back and teach.”
More than 44% of Xavier
graduates go on to graduate or professional school and 100% of our education
majors in recent years passed the National Teachers’ Exam before graduation.
Xavier ranks first in producing African Americans with undergraduates degrees
in the life and physical sciences, African American pharmacists, and in the
number of African American students sent to medical school.
“What I
love about Xavier is the willingness to give the average student a chance.
While continuing to raise the bar and develop professionals, who can and
have always competed with the best, our Alma Mater never lost sight of the
mission of Katherine Drexel, to provide an opportunity for the least privileged
to become leaders in their fields of endeavor.”
- Joy Bachemin,
Class of ’60 National President, Xavier Alumni Association
“I
let my students know: you don’t come here to make art. You are here,
first, to learn how art is made. For there can be no creativity without discipline.
Our faculty are working artists who make the same demands on our students
as we make on ourselves.”
-
John T. Scott, Professor of Art, MacArthur
Genius Award Recipient Class of ’62
“It’s never a dull
day. There’s always something interesting going on here.”

Clifton, Class of 2005
