Great Potential & Desire
Some years ago a national publication chronicling Xavier’s
academic success quoted a student whose description of our tough-love philosophy
still resonates: “Gradually, they saw away your cane, and you have
to walk on your own.”
Learning to Learn
“I tried
to use here the same study habits I used in high school. That did not work
at all. When I went to pick up my mid-term grades, my advisor shook his head
and said, ‘We need to talk about this.’
I was shocked. Destroyed.
I’d never been in this situation before and I was about to panic. The
first thing my advisor said was, ‘tell me how you study.’ He
helped me come up with new techniques for studying and we developed a system
that has really served me well.”

All Xavier students are assigned an e-mail account, our residence
halls are networked, and technology is used extensively in teaching and curriculum
development. We encourage you to bring your personal computer to Xavier or
you may take advantage of our special computer purchase program.
“Xavier
has a culture of tutoring and group learning. As a student, if you really
know a subject, you have a responsibility to help others. We've heard
that when Xavier students go on to advanced study, if there are no study
groups where they are, our students form them.”
