Study Abroad
How to Apply:
In order to participate in credit earning study abroad, you must meet all requirements for sophomore standing, have completed 29 residency hours, and satisfy any GPA requirement set by the program sponsor (usually 2.5 to 3.0 minimum).
The first thing to do is to register with the Center for Intercultural and International Programs, located in 105 Music Building on the Xavier campus. The Center has an extensive study abroad library and experienced staff to help you select a program that meets your academic, personal, and financial needs. In order to facilitate the participation of Xavier students in study abroad, Xavier has signed contracts with some 30 institutions that sponsor programs throughout the world. Here is a list of these Xavier approved and affiliated programs.
Once you have selected your program in consultation with your academic advisor, department chair and director of the
CIIP, it is your responsibility to apply directly to the program. Study abroad programs usually have deadlines in September and October for spring and in March and April for fall. In addition to the program application, you must complete an application for academic approval of your program by Xavier in order to earn credit for your study abroad. This application is due by November 15 for spring and April 15 for fall.
While you study abroad, you remain registered at Xavier. For fall or spring semester you register for a minimum of 12 hours of FRGN 3000 - Foreign Study. As a registered student you are entitled to financial aid. Most forms of financial aid (federal loans and grants as well as Xavier need-based and merit-based scholarships) can be applied to study abroad. In addition, there are study abroad scholarships available offered by private organizations and the US federal government. A list of study abroad scholarships follows, and more details as well as application forms are available in the International Center.
You are guaranteed full academic credit for work done abroad through a Xavier approved and affiliated program. However, whether or not any particular course will satisfy major, minor or core requirements is up to the department chair. In so far as possible, you will obtain approval for your program before you go. Although the course titles and credits earned abroad will appear on your Xavier transcript, the grades will not be calculated into your Xavier GPA - academic work done abroad is treated on a pass-fail basis.
As you can see, study abroad involves a lot of advance preparation in order to insure that everything goes smoothly. You are advised to begin thinking about it a year or more in advance, in order to plan a study abroad experience that is carefully integrated with your on-campus degree program.
